How Much Revenue AI Search Drives for Ecommerce

Published October 27, 2026

Key takeaways

  • Published samples put AI assistants well under 1% of revenue, orders and traffic, and each sample measures a different one.
  • AI visits and orders are growing several times faster than other channels, and AI visitors converted better than organic search in most 2026 comparisons.
  • Measured AI revenue is a floor, because AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks count as organic and many ChatGPT clicks arrive without a source.
Source Sample and period Metric Result
Ethercycle 10 US Shopify stores, January to August 2026 Revenue share 0.12%, at most 0.19% after adjusting for untagged ChatGPT visits
Shero Commerce 73 stores, 42 on Shopify, 2026 Order share 0.26%
Conductor 1,215 enterprise sites, May to September 2025 Traffic share, consumer discretionary sites 0.48%
Shopify Q2 2026 call All Shopify stores AI order volume against $116 billion GMV Described as "small", share not disclosed

Every public sample puts AI search at a fraction of a percent, but the samples measure different things. Revenue share counts sales value, order share counts purchases, traffic share counts visits, and conversion rate counts the visits that end in an order. A channel's three shares differ whenever its conversion rate or order value differs from the site average, so read each figure as its own metric. This report sets out what the data says as of 20 October 2026, what it leaves out, and how a Shopify brand can read its own number.

How much revenue does AI search drive for Shopify brands today?

AI search drives well under 1% of measured revenue for the Shopify stores in published samples today, and only one multi-store sample measures revenue directly.

The closest thing to a direct measurement comes from agencies that publish their clients' data. Ethercycle, a Shopify agency, found AI assistants brought 0.12% of revenue across ten established stores from January to August 2026, and says its AI-optimized clients sit "closer to a ceiling than a floor".

Shero Commerce measured orders rather than revenue. AI assistants brought 0.26% of orders and 0.21% of sessions across 73 stores in 2026, and most AI visits came from ChatGPT. Both samples are agency clients, not the market, so treat them as reference points rather than benchmarks.

Shopify has not published AI's share of orders or GMV. On its Q2 2026 call, president Harley Finkelstein said the volume "relative to $116 billion GMV is small".

How fast is AI search revenue growing?

AI search is growing fast from that small base, though Adobe and Shopify measure growth in different units.

Shopify reports orders and sessions on its own stores. It said AI-referred orders grew nearly 13 times year over year in Q1 2026, with AI referral sessions up more than eight times. On the Q2 call, it said AI-driven traffic and orders tripled year over year.

The two multiples are not the same metric, and a larger base makes the same growth look smaller, so the drop from 13 times to three times is not proof that demand slowed. Shopify reports its Q3 results on 3 November 2026, after this report's cut-off.

Adobe reports visits to US retail sites, not orders. AI referral visits rose 62% year over year in July 2026, as reported by Digital Commerce 360. Traffic from generative AI tools to retail sites during holiday 2025 rose 693.4% from a year earlier, while Adobe called the base of AI users "modest". For holiday 2026 it forecasts AI traffic up 130% year over year, a growth rate rather than a share of sales.

Do AI visitors convert better than organic search visitors?

AI visitors converted better than organic search visitors in most 2026 comparisons, by a margin that depends on which sessions each source counts.

Shopify found that AI-referred sessions starting on a product page converted nearly 50% higher than organic sessions in Q1 2026, and with an average order value 14% higher. Both figures cover only sessions that start on a product page, and Shopify gave no sample size.

Shero's median store tells a smaller story. AI visits converted at 1.27% against 1.09% for Google organic, and AI converted better on 41 of the 61 stores with enough AI visits to compare, so about a third of those stores saw the opposite.

Where the orders land matters too. Shopify said half of AI-referred sessions land directly on a product page, and that 75% of AI-attributed orders in Q2 came from outside its top 100 categories. The product page and the long tail of the catalog are where AI revenue shows up, which points the work at product data and page content. How shoppers use assistants before they reach that page is covered in how AI shopping assistants are changing product discovery.

Why your measured number is too low

Measured AI revenue is a floor, and each data source misses a different part of it.

  • Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode count as organic search. GA4's AI Assistant channel excludes them by design, and Shopify and Conductor count them as Google organic too.
  • Visits without a referrer land in direct traffic. Ethercycle's adjustment for untagged ChatGPT visits lifts its figure from 0.12% to at most 0.19%, which keeps AI small while showing how much the raw number understates it.
  • Shopify's AI channel report adds referral sales and in-chat checkout sales together, does not describe how it attributes them, and is not available for headless stores.
  • Survey answers are what customers remember, not tracked visits.

The floor and Ethercycle's "closer to a ceiling" remark are compatible. AI's real share is above what tracking records, and still small.

A brand can get closer to its own number with tools that already exist.

  • In GA4, read the default AI Assistant channel. Google gives ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok as examples of its sources, so check the session source report for perplexity.ai and claude.ai and note where those visits land.
  • In the Shopify admin, open Sales channels, then Agentic, to see sales, orders, sessions and conversion for each AI channel. ShopifyQL adds an agentic_referring_channel field covering ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot and Shop, so filter Perplexity and Claude by referrer domain.
  • Ask "How did you hear about us?" after checkout, with AI assistants as an option.
  • Compare AI-referred conversion and order value against organic each month, since the trend says more than one month's share.

The business case for AI search uses these numbers to decide how much effort the channel deserves now.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI search revenue worth reporting separately if it is under 1%?

Yes, because the channel is growing fast and its visitors convert well. A separate line shows the trend early and stops AI visits from hiding inside direct and organic traffic.

Which AI assistant sends the most shopping visits?

ChatGPT, by a wide margin in the samples published so far. In Shero Commerce's 73-store sample, ChatGPT accounted for 88.1% of AI assistant visits in 2026, so a brand's AI tracking should start there and add Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude.

When will there be better data on AI revenue?

Shopify's Q3 2026 results on 3 November and Adobe's holiday 2026 results in early January 2027 are the next public updates. Date every figure you report, since these numbers change each quarter.
