Getting products into ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is mostly a question of which pipe each assistant reads from. ChatGPT takes Shopify products from Shopify Catalog. Google AI Mode and Gemini take them from Google Merchant Center. When a product is missing from either, check the pipe before anything else.
This guide walks through each channel for a Shopify brand, the feed attributes that matter, and how to check the setup worked. Platform details are as of 22 October 2026 and change often.

A Shopify store gets its products into ChatGPT shopping results through Shopify Catalog, which shares eligible products with ChatGPT by default, as long as the store sells to US customers and has its store policies filled in.
Shopify's ChatGPT selling page sets the conditions. The store must sell to customers in the United States, though it can be based elsewhere. It must have terms of service, a privacy policy and a return and refund policy completed in Settings, then Policies. And its products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog.
There is no form to fill in and no feed to build. The setting that matters is already on under Sales channels, then Agentic, unless someone switched it off. Shoppers buy on the brand's own checkout, which opens inside ChatGPT, rather than through OpenAI's in-chat Instant Checkout, which OpenAI scaled back in March 2026, as Modern Retail reported.
Shopify lists the reasons in its Catalog requirements. A product needs a title, at least one image and a price above zero, must be published with a product URL, and cannot be unlisted or hidden from search engines. The store must be on a paid plan and not password protected.
Some exclusions catch brands out. Products with no product category are excluded as uncategorized, and some categories are excluded outright, including alcohol, tobacco and vaping, prescription and medical products, and sexual health and wellness.
To see the result, open Sales channels, then Agentic, then Shopify Catalog under Sources. It shows how many products are shared, or an "Ineligible" warning with the reason.
Brands on other platforms can apply to OpenAI for direct feed access, which OpenAI says is available to approved partners for now. Approved merchants send a product feed in JSONL, CSV or TSV, with OpenAI recommending a full upload once a day and price and stock updates through its API in between. Shopify's Agentic plan is the other route, since it lets brands on other platforms add products to Shopify Catalog.
Products reach Google AI Mode and Gemini from Google Merchant Center, which a Shopify store fills through the Google & YouTube sales channel.
Shopify's Google AI Mode page sets stricter terms than ChatGPT. The store must be based in the United States and sell to US customers, and it needs a valid Merchant Center account. Products flow through the Google & YouTube channel, which syncs products and shipping settings, or through a third-party feed.
Merchant Center then decides what can show. Google states that disapproved products stop showing across Google, while products with warnings still show with limited performance. Clear the Needs attention tab before anything else, starting with price mismatches between the feed and the product page, where one documented cause is prices loaded by JavaScript.
Google adds one optional layer. Its conversational attributes, such as questions and answers, related products and variant options, help its AI systems understand product details. Google calls them completely optional, says they do not affect approval, and recommends adding them through a supplemental data source.
Direct checkout in AI Mode and Gemini is switched on by default for eligible Shopify stores. The trade-offs, including pixels that do not fire, are covered in getting a DTC brand ready for AI shopping agents.

The attributes that matter most are the ones every channel reads, since filling them once keeps the product complete across ChatGPT, Google and the store's own search.
| Attribute | OpenAI feed | Google Merchant Center | Shopify field |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title | Required, up to 150 characters | Required | Title |
| Description | Required, up to 5,000 characters | Required | Description |

| Availability | Required | Required | Inventory |
| Brand | Required | Required for most new products | Vendor |
| GTIN | Optional, valid check digit | Strongly recommended if available | Barcode |
| MPN | Optional | Required only without a GTIN | Metafield or SKU |

| Variants | Optional group ID | Item group ID | Variants and options |
Sources are OpenAI's product feed specification and Google's product data specification. OpenAI's spec states plainly that "eligibility does not guarantee display", and Google says the same of free listings.
Beyond the required fields, the most useful work is writing descriptions that state materials, fit, dimensions and use cases, and filling the barcode field for every product that has a GTIN. Shopify's Catalog optimization page lists the barcode among the fields it considers.
The free Shopify Knowledge Base app, launched in May 2025, lets a brand review and edit the FAQs that AI shopping agents use to answer questions about its store, such as shipping times or return rules. The answers do not appear on the storefront. Shopify presents it as a way to make answers about the store accurate, not as a way to appear more often.
Check these places, and accept that none of them shows a per-product "live in ChatGPT" status.
The agentic home in the Shopify admin also shows sales, orders and sessions per AI channel, and a listing quality score per product covering description, images, reviews, variants and policies.
When products still do not show, the usual causes are a missing product category, an unlisted or password-protected product, a Merchant Center disapproval, or a channel switched off. If products show with wrong details, why AI gets your product information wrong traces where those errors come from.

DTC Growth AuditNo. Shopify Catalog shares eligible products with ChatGPT by default. Direct applications to OpenAI are for merchants outside Shopify.
Neither OpenAI nor Google says a GTIN raises display. It helps systems match the product to the right item, and Google strongly recommends it when one exists.
Shopify says Catalog updates product data continuously, and opting out of ChatGPT can take up to 7 days. For Merchant Center, Google says re-crawls after a fix usually take 24 to 48 hours.
