You switch ecommerce platforms without losing revenue by planning the move in dated phases, freezing changes on the old store during peak season, mapping every URL before launch, and launching in a quiet week. For a Magento store moving to Shopify this autumn, that means no launch before Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2026, a build that runs through the holidays, and a launch in late February 2027.
Most lost revenue in a replatform comes from timing and sequence. Teams pick a date first, then squeeze redirects, data and tracking into the last fortnight. Moving a store is closer to moving a restaurant kitchen. You build the new kitchen while the old one keeps serving, you never move on the busiest night of the year, and you test every burner before the first booking. This guide gives the plan by phase and week, with Magento (Adobe Commerce) to Shopify as the worked case. Platform details are as of 27 October 2026.

A Magento store should move to Shopify in a low-traffic window that falls before its version loses Adobe's support, which for most brands now means the first quarter of 2027.
Adobe's Adobe Commerce lifecycle policy, last updated 18 September 2026, sets the deadlines. Standard support for 2.4.6 ended on 11 August 2026, with extended support to 31 August 2027. Version 2.4.7 keeps standard support until 31 May 2027. Extended support for 2.4.4 and 2.4.5 ended in April and August 2026. Magento 1 reached end of life on 30 June 2020, as Help Net Security reported at the time, so any 1.x store still trading is running without security patches.
Adobe defines standard support as "quality fixes, security patches, and full Adobe Commerce on-call support." These dates cover Adobe Commerce only, so a Magento Open Source store should confirm its own position with its developer.
Google gives the other half of the timing rule. Its site move guidance says to "time your move to coincide with lower traffic, if possible." Black Friday falls on 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday on 30 November. No DTC brand should launch a new store in November or December. For most brands we would plan the launch for the weeks after the January sale, and a brand with a Valentine's or spring peak should pick its own quiet week.
Each phase of a migration owns one kind of work and ends with a sign-off, so a problem found late does not reopen everything before it.
Inventory every URL with organic traffic, backlinks or paid clicks, every Magento extension and its replacement, every integration and every custom checkout rule. Record four weeks of baseline numbers by channel. A baseline taken across BFCM shows how the old store behaves under load.
Build the Shopify store, theme and apps in a development store while the live Magento store trades unchanged. Restructure the catalog for Shopify's limits. A product can carry up to 3 options and 250 images, according to Shopify's product CSV guide, so a Magento configurable product with four or more attributes needs splitting or a new structure. Write the redirect map in the same phase, from the URL inventory.
Load data in Shopify's order. Its migration guide says to import products first, then customers, then historical orders. A product CSV can't exceed 15 MB, and customer files have the same ceiling, so large stores load in several files. Historical orders have no CSV option and need a migration app or the API.
Run at least two full rehearsals. The first finds the mapping errors. The second proves the fixes and times the final load.
Freeze content on Magento, load the final data delta, import redirects, switch the domain and test every channel.
Compare daily against the baseline for two weeks, then weekly. Keep the old store readable and closed to orders for at least a month, so the team can check a missing field.

You protect search traffic by redirecting every old URL with value to its exact new equivalent, loading those redirects before the domain points to Shopify, and watching Search Console every day after launch.
Shopify changes the URL of almost every product and category, and the risks that follow are covered in what breaks in an ecommerce replatform. The planning point is the sequence. Shopify's URL redirect documentation lets you upload the whole map as one CSV through Content, Menus, URL redirects and Import, and says "URL redirects start working immediately." A redirect fires only from a broken URL, so it works once the old path stops loading on the new store.
Shopify's own Magento migration guide, a vendor source, says to "stage all 301 redirects before pointing the domain" and warns that "a redirect to a 404 is worse than no redirect at all." Google asks for permanent redirects such as 301, kept "generally at least 1 year," and a new sitemap submitted in Search Console.
The Change of Address tool is the step teams wrongly add to the plan. Google's Change of Address help page says it is for a move "from one domain or subdomain to another." A Magento to Shopify move on the same domain skips it. Use it only when the brand also changes its domain, and keep the redirects for at least a year, as Google advises, since the tool itself runs for 180 days.
AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Google AI Mode can keep linking to URLs they read before the move, one more reason every redirect must resolve, and new product pages need clean schema and open crawler access from day one, as set out in technical AEO for ecommerce sites.
This checklist assumes work starts on Monday 2 November 2026 and the store launches on Tuesday 23 February 2027. The dates are our recommended example. Move the whole plan if your quiet season falls elsewhere.
That 90-day window ends a week before 2.4.7 loses standard support on 31 May 2027.
Leadership should decide the launch window, the freeze rules and who can stop the launch, because those are the decisions a project team cannot make for itself.
Before any build work, have the founder or CMO sign the launch date and go or no-go criteria, operations to sign the freeze rules, and finance to agree the revenue drop that would trigger a rollback. Write the go or no-go criteria down before launch week, when the pressure to ship is highest. In our view a launch that slips two weeks costs far less than one that goes live with a broken checkout.

Get a clear picture of where your store is losing revenue, what to stop now and which actions to take first with our DTC Growth Audit.
DTC Growth AuditIt depends on catalog size, integrations and custom features, and we found no reliable published benchmark. The example plan in this guide runs 17 weeks from audit to launch, plus 90 days of stabilization.
You can build during the holidays, but you should not launch. Keep the live store frozen from early November until the week after Cyber Monday, and launch in your next quiet window.
Only if January is genuinely quiet for you. Many brands run a January sale, so the safer window is the first low week after it.
