"Is AI search worth the money, and when will we see it?" is the question a DTC founder gets from the CFO. The short answer is that AI search earns a funded test for a brand with existing data, judged on its own conversion figures within a quarter, not a large budget on the promise of a date.
This brief sets out the case as of 20 October 2026, with the return, the cost, the timeline and what to measure. The sources are vendor and platform data, and where they stop, it says so.

AI search is worth a measured investment for a DTC brand with existing data, because the channel is small today but converts better than organic search and is growing fast.
The channel is small. AI referrals were 0.48% of website traffic in consumer discretionary, against nearly 18% for Google organic, in Conductor's benchmark of 1,215 enterprise sites from May to September 2025.
The visitors are valuable. In Q1 2026, product-page sessions referred by AI converted nearly 50% better than organic search on Shopify stores, with an average order value 14% higher. Adobe data reported by Digital Commerce 360 put AI conversion 60% above non-AI traffic in July 2026.
The advantage is new. A year before Q1 2026, AI traffic converted 38% worse than other traffic, according to Adobe figures reported by TechCrunch. Treat the channel as one to test and measure, not as a revenue engine. The detail on revenue share is in how much revenue AI search drives for ecommerce.
For many brands the stronger argument is protecting the search traffic they already have.
Organic clicks have fallen on research queries that show an AI Overview. On informational queries with an AI Overview, organic click-through rate fell from 1.76% in June 2024 to 0.61% in September 2025, in Seer Interactive's study of 3,119 queries across 42 organizations.
Being cited softens the loss. Across 53 brands in 2025, Seer's 2026 update found informational queries averaged 2.07% organic CTR when the brand was cited in the AI Overview and 0.94% when it was not. Seer says the gap may reflect brand authority rather than the citation itself.
The exposure sits mostly in research and comparison searches. Seer found AI Overviews on 36% of informational queries, 8% of commercial queries and 5% of transactional ones, so a DTC brand's buying-intent traffic is less affected than its guides and comparisons.
The cost of AI search for a DTC brand is mostly work it already pays for, plus a smaller layer on top.
For Google, there is little separate work. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no other special optimization required. The SEO budget a brand already funds covers most of it.
The extra layer covers the following work.
Tracking is the cheap part. Several AI visibility tools offer entry plans priced like a standard SEO subscription. Content and outside mentions take most of the effort.

No platform publishes how long new content takes to be cited, so a business case should not promise a date.
What can be stated is the floor. Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks, and requesting a recrawl does not guarantee inclusion. OpenAI says its systems adjust to a robots.txt change in about 24 hours, which covers access, not citation.
Freshness plays a part. In July 2025 data, Ahrefs found that URLs cited by AI assistants were 25.7% newer on average than URLs ranking in organic results, across about 17 million citations, a correlation rather than a rule.
The honest framing for a CFO is eligibility in days to weeks, with citation measured over months and never guaranteed.
The return on AI search is best framed as a quarterly test against the brand's own organic numbers, not an industry ROI multiple, because no source publishes one.
GA4's AI Assistant channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode, which stay in organic search, so the measured return is a floor. How to measure a DTC brand's AI search visibility sets out the full tracking method.

DTC Growth AuditMostly not. Google's AI features use the same index as search, so the core work is shared. The added budget covers product data, outside mentions and tracking.
No. No platform guarantees citation or recommendation, and AI answers vary from one query to the next. A brand can improve its eligibility and measure the trend.
It is harder to measure. A smaller brand may not have enough AI-referred sessions in a quarter to compare against organic with confidence, so the test takes longer to read.
