How AI Shopping Assistants Are Changing Product Discovery

Published October 27, 2026

Key takeaways

  • Shoppers now build product shortlists inside ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, then visit a brand's site to check before buying.
  • AI referrals are still a small share of retail traffic, but Adobe data shows they are growing fast and converting above average.
  • Google and OpenAI both point brands to complete product data, so Shopify brands should fix the catalog before chasing new tactics.

A shopper who wants a linen shirt that holds up on a hot commute can now ask ChatGPT for options, compare them in the same chat and narrow the list to two brands before opening a single store tab. For a Shopify brand, that moves the first impression. The comparison that used to happen across Google results, marketplaces and your product pages now happens partly inside an AI assistant, and a brand that is missing from that answer is missing from the shortlist.

The shift is real, and it is still small next to Google search. This article explains what ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot now do for shoppers, what the traffic data shows, and where a DTC brand should put its effort first. Product details are as of 20 October 2026, and these features change from month to month.

How are AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT and Google AI Mode changing how customers find and choose products?

AI shopping assistants such as ChatGPT and Google AI Mode move the research stage of shopping into a conversation, so many customers reach a brand's site with a shortlist already formed. The shopper describes a need in plain words, the assistant suggests products, and follow-up questions about fit, materials or price narrow the list without a new search. Google says its Shopping Graph now holds more than 60 billion product listings, which AI Mode and Gemini draw on when they suggest products.

Customers still check before they buy. In an Adobe survey of US consumers in July 2026, 66% said they visit a brand's website directly to verify an AI recommendation, as reported by Chief Marketer. That makes the product page the place where an assistant's recommendation is confirmed or lost, so price, stock, reviews and return terms need to match what the shopper was told.

What each assistant does for shoppers today

ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity differ in how they handle checkout and in how a Shopify brand's products reach them.

Assistant What the shopper does there Checkout How a Shopify brand's products get in
ChatGPT Asks for product comparisons and shopping research in chat OpenAI scaled back Instant Checkout in March 2026, and purchases from Shopify stores finish on the merchant's own site Catalog-eligible products are listed by default for US buyers through Shopify Agentic Storefronts
Google AI Mode and Gemini Searches conversationally across the Shopping Graph, now with a Universal Cart in the US Agentic checkout with eligible merchants Merchant Center product feed, with checkout open to select US Shopify stores
Microsoft Copilot Asks for shopping suggestions in chat Direct checkout for Shopify merchants Shopify Agentic Storefronts
Perplexity Gets product cards inside an answer Checkout with PayPal for US users, with the retailer as merchant of record No 2026 merchant terms found, and Shopify's 2026 updates do not name Perplexity

AI visitors arrive later in the decision

AI referrals to US retail sites grew 62% year over year in July 2026, according to Adobe Analytics data reported by Digital Commerce 360.

Those visits converted at a rate 60% higher than non-AI traffic in the same month. One likely reason is that these shoppers have already compared options before they arrive.

The advantage is recent. In early 2025, AI traffic converted 38% worse than other traffic, as TechCrunch reported from Adobe's data a year later. Adobe compares AI visits with non-AI traffic and has not published AI's share of total traffic, so these numbers describe the quality of the visits rather than the size of the channel.

Is AI search a threat or an opportunity for a Shopify brand's customer acquisition?

AI search is both a threat and an opportunity for a Shopify brand, and in October 2026 the threat sits mostly in early research traffic while the opportunity sits in fewer, better-qualified visits.

Where the threat shows up

Marketers already report losing early-stage search traffic. In a Modern Retail survey of 142 brand and agency professionals published in January 2026, 37% said their companies had seen decreases in upper-funnel search traffic.

That figure is what marketers report, not measured traffic, and the sample mixes brands with agencies. It is still a warning for DTC brands that rely on buying guides and blog posts to start a customer relationship and fill retargeting audiences.

When an assistant answers "best linen shirt for hot weather" with a shortlist, the shopper may never click the guide that used to introduce your brand. Brands left out of the answer can lose the first contact, and the brands named in it get that contact without paying for a click. Buying guides still earn their place when they carry what an assistant can use, such as clear comparisons, sizing and materials stated plainly, and links to the products they recommend.

Where the opportunity is

AI is still a small channel next to Google. Conductor's benchmark of enterprise sites found that AI referrals made up 0.48% of all website traffic in consumer discretionary categories.

Organic Google sent nearly 18% of traffic in the same benchmark. That data covers May to September 2025, and some AI visits land in analytics as direct traffic, so the current AI share is likely higher than the benchmark shows. In Conductor's data, Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews are also counted as Google organic, which means part of the AI shift is already inside a channel brands know.

For a Shopify brand, getting into the channel costs little. ChatGPT and Copilot listing is switched on through Shopify's Agentic Storefronts, so the work is product data and reputation rather than media spend. Brands with complete product data and a strong presence on other sites are better placed, since both are what platform guidance and the available research point to.

What makes an AI assistant recommend one brand over another?

Complete, accurate product data is the starting point Google and OpenAI both name for brands, although neither publishes how it ranks products.

Google's Merchant Center guidance for AI features asks merchants to provide high-quality data, use the terms shoppers search for in titles and descriptions, and fill in missing attributes. At Google Marketing Live in May 2026, Google also said strong product descriptions are critical for conversational queries.

OpenAI's product feed documentation says recommended attributes improve ranking, relevance and user trust, without describing the ranking itself.

Mentions on other sites also show up in the research. An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found that YouTube mentions had the strongest correlation with brand visibility in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews, while backlinks showed a very weak link. Correlation is not cause, the study leans toward larger brands and it was not built on shopping questions. It points to off-site mentions, such as creator videos, as one signal worth tracking.

Content changes on a brand's own pages can help too, with limits. Researchers testing generative engine optimization found that adding cited sources, quotations and statistics raised a page's visibility by up to 40% on a research benchmark, with results that varied by topic. No tactic guarantees a recommendation, and none of these tests ran on live shopping assistants.

Where a Shopify brand should start

A brand can act on this within its current budget, and starting measurement early gives every later change a baseline to compare against.

  1. Check the channel settings. In the Shopify admin, open Sales Channels, then Agentic Storefronts, and confirm which AI channels list your products and which products are eligible or excluded.
  2. Set up measurement. Google's Merchant Center AI performance insights show share of voice for shopping queries in AI Mode and AI Overviews, and a fixed set of shopper questions checked monthly in ChatGPT and Perplexity covers the rest.
  3. Fix the product data. Titles, attributes, variants, price and stock should match the store, in Shopify and in the Merchant Center feed.
  4. Build mentions where assistants look. Reviews, creator videos and press coverage reach answers that a feed alone does not.
  5. Keep the product page ready for a shopper who arrives already convinced. The visit that confirms an AI recommendation needs current stock, clear sizing and visible return terms.

Google search should keep its budget while this work runs. Organic Google still sends far more traffic than AI assistants, and most of the product data work above improves both.

Start with the catalog assistants read

We are a performance marketing and AI search agency, and for Shopify brands we treat product data as the shared input to Google, ChatGPT and the product page.

  • At the start we agree which channels we run end to end and which work stays with your team.
  • Your strategist approves every change to content, spend or tracking before it goes live.
  • Your monthly report shows revenue, margin and new customers from your store's data.

Frequently asked questions

Can a brand pay to be recommended in ChatGPT shopping answers?

OpenAI's merchant documentation sets separate requirements for ads and for checkout, and it does not say how organic product results are ranked. Check the current terms before assuming product results carry no paid placement. For organic answers, product data and mentions on other sites are what a brand can work on.

How can a brand tell whether AI assistants recommend its products?

Combine Merchant Center's AI insights and a monthly question set with a separate AI referral segment in analytics. Keep in mind that some AI visits are recorded as direct traffic, so the referral segment shows a floor rather than the full picture.

Does a Shopify store appear in ChatGPT automatically?

For US buyers, yes, once products are eligible for the Shopify Catalog. An excluded product cannot be recommended, so check eligibility in the Agentic Storefronts settings.

Should a DTC brand move budget from Google SEO to AI search?

Not for most brands in 2026. Organic Google still sends far more traffic than AI assistants, and Google's AI Mode draws on the same product data and pages that SEO work improves. Treat AI search as part of the same program, measured on its own.
