Agentic commerce is shopping in which an AI agent does part of the work a shopper used to do, from finding and comparing products to placing the order. Shopify's definition is a model of ecommerce where AI agents shop on behalf of consumers, with the agent researching, comparing and selecting products.
For a DTC brand, the change is less about a new channel to buy and more about a new reader of the catalog. The agent reads product data, policies and prices, and whatever it reads becomes the pitch. This explainer covers how agentic commerce works as of 20 October 2026, the two protocols behind it, and what a brand needs to decide.

Agentic commerce is AI agents finding, comparing and buying products for shoppers, and for a DTC brand it means its products are discovered and sometimes bought inside an AI assistant rather than only on its own site.
Discovery and transaction behave differently. Discovery is the agent finding and recommending products, and it is active by default for eligible US Shopify stores. Transaction is the checkout, and it works differently on each platform.
Shopify's Agentic Storefronts help page lists four AI channels, namely ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta, with others such as Perplexity grouped under other channels. The channels are active by default for eligible stores, and orders show in the Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution.
Checkout is where the platforms split. ChatGPT sends the buyer to the merchant's own checkout in an in-app browser, while Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot and Meta use a Shopify-powered checkout inside the chat. The merchant stays the merchant of record in each case, which matters for returns, payments and customer service.
ACP and UCP are open standards that set how an AI agent talks to a store, so a brand does not need a separate integration for every assistant.
| Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) | Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Built by | OpenAI and Stripe, announced September 2025 | Google with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, launched January 2026 |
| Used by | ChatGPT | Google AI Mode and Gemini |
| What it covers | Cart, feed, orders, authentication and checkout | Catalog search, cart building, identity linking, checkout and order management |
| Status | Open source and in beta, latest stable version April 2026 | Endorsed by more than 20 companies, including Adyen, Mastercard, Stripe and Visa |
| Merchant of record | The merchant | The merchant |
Neither protocol decides which products an agent recommends. They standardize how an agent asks a store for products, prices and stock, and how an order is passed back, so adopting them does not by itself raise a brand's visibility.
Google's March 2026 update added cart, catalog and identity linking to UCP, designed to let shoppers buy several items from one store and use loyalty benefits inside AI Mode.

For a Shopify brand, Shopify handles the protocols, so the brand's job is the catalog it feeds them and the settings it chooses.
Shopify Catalog is the structured product layer that agents read, and eligible products are listed in it by default. To be eligible, each product needs a title, at least one image, a price and shipping to the US or Canada, according to Shopify's agentic commerce guide.
Brands not on Shopify can join too. Shopify's Agentic plan, public since March 2026, lets brands on other platforms add their products to Shopify Catalog so they are discoverable in ChatGPT.
The decisions that remain are about control.
The market-size figures are projections, and two of them are often mixed up.
McKinsey's October 2025 report projected that agents could orchestrate $900 billion to $1 trillion of US B2C retail revenue by 2030, a figure read here through secondary sources because McKinsey's page could not be opened. A separate ICSC and McKinsey report, covered by Retail Dive, projects that US B2C agentic commerce revenue may reach $1 trillion by 2030.
"Orchestrated" is broader than a purchase the agent completes alone, and both numbers rest on assumptions about how fast merchants adopt. Read them as a direction of travel, not a forecast for one brand.
We are a performance marketing and AI search agency, and our AI search work since 2019 now reaches into the catalog and checkout settings that AI agents use.

DTC Growth AuditThey overlap. AI search is an assistant answering a question and recommending products, while agentic commerce extends that to the agent building a cart and completing a purchase.
Not if the store runs on Shopify, since Shopify Catalog and Agentic Storefronts handle the connection to each AI channel. Brands on other platforms can use Shopify's Agentic plan or work with their platform and payment provider.
Yes. Each channel can be switched on or off in the Shopify admin, and checkout inside the chat can be managed separately from discovery.
