ChatGPT Shopping and Google AI Mode recommend products in stages. First a product has to be in the pool the assistant can draw from, which for a Shopify brand means Shopify Catalog for ChatGPT and Google Merchant Center for AI Mode. Then the assistant picks from that pool based on what the shopper asked and on facts in the listing, such as price, availability, reviews and product details. Neither OpenAI nor Google publishes how those facts are weighted.
For a leadership team, that splits the question of whether AI recommends your brand or a competitor into what the brand controls and what it can only measure. This brief covers both, plus the checkout and paid placement decisions that now sit beside organic recommendations. Platform details are as of 25 October 2026.

Products get recommended in ChatGPT Shopping and Google AI Mode when they are eligible through the brand's catalog connection and the assistant judges them the best match for the shopper's request, using listing details such as price, availability, reviews and product attributes.
OpenAI's help center says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, as quoted by Search Engine Journal, and search excerpts of the same page list availability, price, quality and whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller as merchant ranking factors. OpenAI's developer documentation adds that recommended feed attributes such as rich media, reviews and performance signals improve ranking, relevance and user trust, without giving weights.
Google says AI Mode shopping draws on its Shopping Graph, which holds listings with details like reviews, prices, color options and availability, and Google wrote in February 2026 that AI Mode surfaces organic shopping recommendations based on what's most relevant to a query. Neither company publishes a ranking formula, so any agency or tool promising a guaranteed position is selling a guess.
In ChatGPT Shopping, where products come from changed sharply in 2026, and that moved the advantage toward brands with connected catalogs.
In June 2026, Profound's analysis found most ChatGPT product cards came from crawling web pages. By September, the same company reported that on 10 July 2026 the share of ChatGPT Shopping picks from feed-connected merchants rose from 8.26% to 61.54% in a day. The top ten merchants' share of references rose from 22.5% to 41.8%, and 450 of the 517 Profound customers it tracked lost at least a third of their shopping visibility.
These are a vendor's observations, and OpenAI has not confirmed a change. They still point to one action for leaders. For a Shopify brand, being in Shopify Catalog is now the main route into ChatGPT Shopping, and Shopify Catalog is on by default for eligible stores. The job is confirming it is on, that products are eligible, and that the data is complete.
These levers decide whether a brand's products can be chosen, and each has a clear owner and measure.
| Lever | What it means | Owner [CB/I view] | Measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Products in Shopify Catalog and approved in Merchant Center | Ecommerce manager | Eligible products against active products |
| Listing completeness | Descriptions, variants, GTINs, images and policies filled in | Ecommerce and content | Shopify listing quality, Merchant Center issues |
| Reviews | Volume and rating on hero products | Retention or customer experience | Reviews per hero product |
| Price and stock accuracy | Feed and page match the store | Operations | Price mismatches, out-of-stock picks |
| Outside mentions | Coverage on review and editorial sites assistants cite | PR and SEO | Citations from target sites |
Reviews deserve attention. Profound's June 2026 data showed top-ranked ChatGPT cards with a median of 787 reviews, more than double the 352 for cards in fourth place or lower. That is a correlation measured before the July shift, but it matches what OpenAI says it considers. Google advises that strong product descriptions are critical for discovery in AI results.
The step-by-step setup for each channel is covered in how to get your products into ChatGPT and Google AI Mode.

Whether an assistant names your brand or a competitor changes from one answer to the next, so the question is answered as a share across many runs, not by one search.
Research by SparkToro and Gumshoe found an identical brand list came back under once in 100 runs of one prompt across ChatGPT and Google's AI. Even category leaders such as Bose and Sony appeared in only part of the answers for headphone prompts. Engines also disagree with each other, which BrightEdge measured on most queries it tested in 2025.
Set up a fixed set of buyer prompts, run each several times on ChatGPT and AI Mode every month, and report the share of answers naming the brand against three to five named competitors. Where available, Google Merchant Center's AI performance insights add a share-of-voice view for shopping queries on AI Mode and AI Overviews.
Being named matters for traffic. In Similarweb's US desktop panel data, shoppers were often more likely to visit the brand an AI tool recommended than its paired competitor in the following week, with gaps that varied widely by pair. That is a vendor panel without a published sample size, so treat it as direction.
Both platforms are testing labeled sponsored product placements next to organic recommendations, so a leadership team needs two budgets and two scorecards.
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in 2026 and says they are labeled as sponsored and kept apart from the answer. Its product-feed campaigns, which build ads from a merchant's catalog, were in beta with US advertisers. Google is testing ad formats in AI Mode, including sponsored entries that can appear inside AI Mode recommendation lists as Highlighted Answers, labeled "Sponsored".
Treat organic eligibility as catalog and reputation work, and paid placement as a media decision judged on incremental sales like any other channel.
The checkout choice differs by assistant. On ChatGPT, Shopify stores have no in-chat checkout to switch on, because OpenAI scaled back Instant Checkout in March 2026 and buyers now finish on the store's own checkout in an in-app browser.
On Google AI Mode and Gemini, Shopify's direct checkout is on by default for eligible stores, and Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire in it. The trade is reach against session data and follow-up, set out in agentic checkout, what DTC brands gain and lose.
"Shopify AI" covers two different things, and only one affects AI recommendations.
Sidekick is Shopify's AI assistant inside the admin, which helps the brand's team write product descriptions, build workflows and analyze store data. Agentic Storefronts is the sales channel that puts products into ChatGPT, AI Mode, Copilot and Meta. Sidekick can help fill in better descriptions, but Shopify does not say it affects how AI channels rank products.

DTC Growth AuditOrganic picks are not ads, according to OpenAI. Sponsored product placements exist separately, are labeled, and are bought as ads.
Common reasons are missing or ineligible products, thin listing data, fewer reviews, and less coverage on the sites assistants cite. Start with eligibility and listing completeness.
Not directly. Sidekick helps the team manage the store. Appearing in ChatGPT depends on Shopify Catalog eligibility and the quality of product data.
