AI Visibility Audit for Ecommerce Brands

Published October 27, 2026 · Updated October 28, 2026

Key takeaways

  • An AI visibility audit for a Shopify store checks both routes into AI answers, the open web and Shopify's product feeds.
  • Check crawler access and product eligibility before running prompts, since a blocked crawler or ineligible catalog explains a missing brand faster.
  • Read a one-time prompt baseline as direction, because AI answers change from one run to the next.

Your CEO asks ChatGPT for the best brand in your category and gets three competitors back. Before anyone rewrites a product page, you need to know whether the assistants can reach your store at all.

An AI visibility audit is a one-time review of whether, how and how accurately your brand shows up in answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Copilot, and what stands in the way. For an ecommerce brand it has to cover what generic templates skip, the product feeds that send your catalog to AI channels without any crawling.

How do you run an AI visibility audit for a Shopify store?

To run an AI visibility audit for a Shopify store, check crawler access, then product eligibility in Shopify Catalog and Merchant Center, then run a fixed set of buyer prompts across AI assistants, and finally check whether the answers are accurate and which sources they cite.

The order matters. Shopify's robots.txt guide says blocking AI crawlers only limits discovery on the open web and doesn't stop Shopify Catalog sharing your products with the AI channels you've switched on. Your store can reach AI answers through crawling or through feeds, and an audit that tests only one can blame the wrong cause.

Check crawler access

Start with these quick checks.

  • Read your live /robots.txt for rules that touch OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and Bingbot, the crawlers behind search answers.
  • Ask whether anyone added a robots.txt.liquid template, which Shopify calls an unsupported customization.
  • Find out whether you run Cloudflare or another proxy in front of Shopify, and check its bot settings.

Training crawlers such as GPTBot and Google-Extended are a separate decision, explained in which AI crawlers to allow. If your audit tool crawls the store, set up signed access first, as Shopify's crawler guide describes, and treat any robots.txt change as a draft for the store owner to sign off.

Check product eligibility

In your Shopify admin, open Sales channels, then Agentic, then Sources, to see how many products are in Shopify Catalog and why your store might be ineligible. Products need a title, an image, a price above zero and a listing that isn't hidden from search engines, among Shopify's Catalog requirements, and ChatGPT also asks that you sell to US customers and complete your terms, privacy and refund policies.

For Google, open the Needs attention tab in Merchant Center. Google says "disapproved products stop showing across Google," so count those first; a warning limits performance but keeps the product visible. For Copilot, Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report in public preview.

Run a prompt baseline

Write the questions your shoppers ask before they buy, without your brand name, such as "best merino base layer for skiing" or "linen sheets that don't wrinkle." Run each one several times on each assistant, with memory off, and record whether you're mentioned, whether you're linked, which competitors appear and which URLs are cited.

Vendors disagree on how many prompts you need, so pick a set you can rerun every month. Report the share of answers that mention you, not a position, because recommendation lists change on nearly every run.

Check accuracy and sources

Ask the assistants about your brand directly, covering price, shipping, returns and key product facts, and note every error with the URL the assistant cited, since that's the page you'll have to get fixed. Then list the third-party sites cited in your category's answers, such as review sites, publications and retailers.

What a useful audit report contains

A useful audit report turns findings into fixes, each with an owner and a way to measure it.

Section Example finding Example fix Owner Metric
Access Proxy blocks PerplexityBot Allow the search crawler in the proxy settings Developer Pass or fail per crawler
Eligibility 14% of products ineligible for missing images Add images, recheck Catalog count Ecommerce manager Share of active products eligible
Prompt baseline Brand named in category answers on Google, rarely in ChatGPT Earn coverage on sites ChatGPT cites SEO and PR Mention rate by assistant
Accuracy Old return window quoted from a 2023 article Update the source page, ask the publisher to correct Content lead Wrong facts per audit
Sources Two review sites cited in most answers Get products reviewed there PR Citations from those sites

The example findings show the format, not results from any store. An AI audit is one part of a full DTC growth audit, which also reads your paid channels, margin and customers.

If a report hands you findings with no owner, send it back. Then plan ongoing measurement after the audit, so you can tell whether your fixes moved the numbers.

An AI visibility audit is only as good as its fix list

We are a performance marketing and AI search agency that has built AI search programs since 2019, and when we audit a Shopify store we read crawler access and feed eligibility before a single prompt is run.

  • Your strategist works from a shared backlog with your marketing team and is held to the same revenue and margin targets you are.
  • Your strategist approves every change to content, spend or tracking before it goes live.
  • At the start we agree which channels we run end to end and which work stays with your team.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an AI visibility audit take?

The access and eligibility checks can be done in a few hours. The prompt baseline takes longer, depending on how many prompts and assistants are included.

Does Shopify block AI crawlers by default?

No. Shopify's crawler guide says a store can be indexed by search engines and large language models without signatures, and its robots.txt guide says blocking crawlers affects only open-web discovery, not Shopify Catalog.

How often should the audit be repeated?

A full audit once or twice a year, with a lighter monthly check of mention rate and AI traffic in between, keeps the baseline current without repeating the whole exercise.
