A director of SEO at a bank is asked why the bank's high-yield savings account rarely comes up when customers ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode where to open one. Rankings for the product page look healthy, and analytics show nothing unusual. Neither report can answer the question, because neither shows what the AI answers say or where they get it.
An AI visibility audit can answer that question before a bank commits to a larger program. It examines the answers, the bank's pages and the sources behind those answers as of the audit date. Its scope is narrower than ongoing measurement, which our guide to measuring a bank's AI search visibility covers.

Audit each product by tracing the answers back to their causes. Finish with a fix list that names an owner for each item. No search engine or regulator publishes a standard procedure for this, so what follows is CB/I Digital's method, built from the platforms' own documentation.
Pick a small number of priority products, usually the ones where a new relationship is valuable and the bank's offer competes. For each, write the questions customers ask while choosing, including versions that name a city or a situation, since answers change when those details appear.
Before the first run, gather each product's current rates, fees, eligibility rules and name, along with their effective dates. The accuracy check later depends on them, and collecting them can take longer than running the questions.
Run each question on each platform more than once, because AI answers vary from run to run. For every answer, record whether the bank is named, whether it is linked, how it is described, which competitors appear and which domains are cited. Our measurement guide lists those fields and explains why a single run proves little.
Google and Bing now publish first-party data that a bank could not get a year ago. Search Console's Generative AI performance report, available to all sites since August 2026, shows impressions of the bank's pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device. It reports impressions and does not show how the bank was described. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, introduced as a public preview in February 2026, shows how often the bank's pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot answers and Bing's AI summaries, and samples the queries the AI used to find them. Both show which pages are already being used, which helps separate a page problem from a reach problem.
Access problems are quick to confirm and quick to fix, because each AI platform uses its own crawler and each crawler is controlled separately. A rule written to block AI training can also block search visibility if it is written broadly, and a firewall rule can block a crawler that robots.txt allows.
| Platform | Crawler that controls search visibility | What to check at a bank |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OAI-SearchBot. GPTBot is separate and governs training only | That OAI-SearchBot is allowed on product pages. OpenAI says sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to take effect |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot. Perplexity-User fetches pages when a user asks and generally ignores robots.txt | That PerplexityBot is allowed in robots.txt and in the web application firewall. Perplexity notes that sites behind a firewall may need to allow its bots explicitly |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Googlebot. Google-Extended affects Gemini apps and model training, not Google Search | That product pages are indexed and eligible for a snippet, and that the site has not been excluded from Search generative AI features in Search Console |
| Microsoft Copilot | Microsoft says Copilot draws on Bing search, so Bing's crawler, Bingbot, needs access to the pages | That Bing can crawl and index the product pages. Microsoft says Bing respects robots.txt preferences in the AI answers it reports on, including Copilot |
| Claude | Claude-SearchBot for search, ClaudeBot for training | That Claude-SearchBot is not blocked if the bank wants to appear in Claude's search results |
Then check whether the pages can be read once reached. Google can render JavaScript, but its own documentation notes that not all bots can, so a rate table that loads through a script may be invisible to other platforms' crawlers. Rates and fees published only in a PDF are worth checking too, since Google indexes PDFs but other platforms do not document how they treat them. A nosnippet or max-snippet setting added years ago on a product page also limits what Google's AI features can use, because Google applies those controls to AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Changes to robots.txt, firewall rules and snippet settings belong to the bank's web and security teams, and some of these settings exist for good reasons. The audit records each one and its effect, and the decision goes to the people who own it.

Mark each answer that describes the bank as accurate, outdated or wrong, and note which source the wrong detail came from. These are Your Money or Your Life topics in Google's terms, where a wrong figure matters more than a missing mention, and our guide to measuring a bank's AI search visibility explains why accuracy sits next to visibility. Our article on keeping bank content compliant while optimizing for AI search explains why a stale term that keeps circulating is also an advertising issue.
Group the cited domains for each product into the bank's own pages, publishers and comparison sites, government sources, forums and video, and other banks. The mix shows where the fix belongs, and our article on why banks are losing the first customer conversation to AI explains how the split between the bank's own pages and comparison sites should guide that choice. Our banking AI citation report shows what that mix tends to look like on each platform, which gives the audit a reference point.
To complete the audit, turn each finding into an action item. Each line names the product, the finding, the evidence behind it, the likely cause, the team that owns the fix and the indicator that will show whether it worked.
| Finding | Likely cause | Owner of the fix |
|---|---|---|
| The bank is rarely named for a product it competes in | No passage on the product page answers the customer's question on its own, or the page cannot be read by some crawlers | Marketing with the web team |
| The bank is named but its site is not linked | Answers rely on publishers, or the bank's page is blocked or not indexed | Marketing, with the web and security teams for access |
| Answers quote outdated rates or fees | An old page, a PDF or an outside listing still carries the earlier terms | Product owns the facts, partnerships owns outside listings |
| Comparison answers leave the bank out | The bank is missing from, or wrongly described on, the comparison sites those answers cite | Partnerships or affiliate team |
| One platform never shows the bank's pages | That platform's crawler is blocked in robots.txt or by the firewall | Web and security teams |
Rank the list by the value of the product and how much of the fix is within the bank's control. Access and accuracy fixes belong at the top, because they are quick to verify and carry the most risk if left alone. Date the record so the team can compare later measurements against the audit baseline.
An audit describes the answers on the dates it was run. It does not prove why an engine chose one source over another, and a fix can only make a better source available to the engine. Answers continue to change after the audit, so the bank needs regular measurement to see whether the fixes are working. Our 90-day plan for banks shows how the audit fits into the first quarter of that work.
CB/I Digital runs AI visibility audits for banks as a defined piece of work, product by product, ending in the dated baseline and ranked fix list described above. The audit needs only read access to start, and access findings go to the bank's web and security teams as recommendations rather than changes we make ourselves.
The audit sits within our SEO & AI Search services. Tell us which products you want covered first, and we will set up a conversation about the scope.
What access does an outside auditor need?
Little to start. The answer review needs no access at all, and the crawler and page checks use public information. For Search Console, read access is enough, as our guide to evaluating an AI search partner for a bank explains. Firewall and log reviews are best done by the bank's security team, with the auditor specifying what to check.
Should the audit cover competitors?
Yes, as they appear in the answers. Recording which banks, fintechs and comparison sites are named alongside the bank shows who the customer sees instead. The audit should stick to public answers and public pages and draw no conclusions about a competitor's own settings.
How often should a bank repeat the audit?
A full audit is worth repeating when something large changes, such as a site migration, a product launch, a merger or a change in security tooling. Between audits, monthly measurement of the same question set shows whether the fixes are holding.
